Food, singing and rapping

On Thursday night we went for a wonderful meal at the ‘sunset’ restaurant Shams Al Asseel in the Makhrool Valley.  We were hosted by Josie and Hazem and their two children.  We were also joined by Shirabe, who is involved with the women’s scholarship fund, and Dhalia who is one of the scholarship young women.  Dhalia is a rapper, part of an all women rapping crew from Dheishe refugee camp and treated us to two of her raps.  Amazingly, she then joined us when we sang… and added one her raps over the top.  It was a completely unique and special experience, and deeply touching for all of us.  We are hoping to visit Dheishe camp before we leave and perhaps even record a version of this.

View from restaurant across the valley. One lone settler has built the house with bright lights and lives on stolen land, this is how settlements begin. An Israeli road goes through a tunnel dug underneath the restaurant.

Sharing food with Shirabe who is part of the Sheffield Palestinian Women’s Scholarship Fund for the West Bank along with Josie and Kirsty.
